The Obama administration approved the sale of the American made rifles last year. But it reversed course and banned the sale in March &#8212; a decision that went largely unnoticed at the time but that is now sparking opposition from gun rights advocates.<br />

The only certainty is that the registry has cost taxpayers at least $2 billion    an astronomical figure given that the Liberals promised the registry would only cost an initial $2 million in start up spending.<br />
In a damning report in 2002, federal Auditor General Sheila Fraser found that program was not only costly, but excessively regulatory, overly complex and difficult for owners to comply with.<br />
